STONE BARN FARM
Picture
The Stone Barn Farm contains three buildings: a unique stone barn (c.1907), a carriage house
(c.1900), and a modest vernacular dwelling (c.1850).  The buildings are located on 160 acres of land
in a northern section of Mount Desert Island, Maine.  Over time the property was occupied by
several generations of the Paine family.  The farm  consisted of 30 acres of fields, 30 acres of marsh,
and 100 acres of timber land.

The barn is a wood-framed  structure with an expansive gambrel roof.  The first story is built of
glacial stone with granite  sills and lintels.  The gambrel end walls of the roof are sheathed with
wood shingles.  A gambrel  peak is on the roof over the board-and-batten front door.  An addition
was added in 1958 to house sheep.  The carriage house is a 1-1/2 story wood structure with
clapboard siding.  The wood-framed Greek Revival style house is 1- 1/2 stories high and sheathed
with wood shingles.

The property is protected by a conservation easement.
