THE DANIEL RICHARDSON BARN
Mount Desert Island, Maine
The Daniel Richardson Barn was build in the early 1800's on a 92 acre forested site by a son of one of the first two settlers on the Island. Portions of the site were cleared for a family farm. It is of the four-bay English Barn type with a 30 x 46 foot floor plan and constructed with an oak post-and-beam frame.

The Richardson Barn current condition, as with other historic Maine barns, has deteriorated over generations as farming decreased or ceased. Families could no longer provide the normal maintenance, and complete restoration would be expensive. Some barns have already collapsed or been taken down. The interiors of these barns often contain artifacts of former farming activities.
I have chosen to document the historic barns of Maine so that images of our roots will be available for future generations. The Daniel Richardson Barn is an example of my objective.
